Nutrition and Immunization Status of Women and Children in Indonesia
In the progress of the health development programs over more than 35 years, Indonesia had succeded to improve the nutrition and immunization status. Unexpectedly, the prolonged multidimensional crisis in Indonesia which was occurred since the mid of 1997, has emerging the worse malnutrition among children and Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) among pregnant women as well as women in the post partum phase. During the time, the immunization coverage was also drop tremendously, which caused a negative impact on mother and child health.
In order to improve the nutritional status of women and children, several program had been launched by the goverment of Indonesia namely Social Safety Net (SSN) program covering all sectors including health sector, which are focused mainly to the vulnerable groups from poor family.
Entering the 21 st century, the Indonesian government has launched the Health Awareness Development . Movement as a National Development aimed at achieving Healthy Indonesian 2010. The basis of this new outlook in health development is well-known as the "Health Paradigm" there has to be a greater orientation towards preventive measures without ignoring curative and rehabilitation measure. Nutrition and immunization are two prominent preventive program in the policy of Health Paradigm Capable of reducing creasing morbidity and mortality risk of women and child. Poor nutritional status combined with frequent childhood ill-nessees which many are preventable through vaccinations still leads in the causing more deaths to the two most vulnerable groups : young children and women at reproductive age.
In line to the unity of nutrition and immunization program in the future, this book provide an information which presents a picture of both the success and the inadequacies of the nutrition and immunization program in Indonesian. This book will be of benefit to all sector linkages who are interested in the improvement Nutrition and immunization program for national and international.
This book consist of 5 chapters, which explaned in details about nutrition and immunization problem and its controling approach in Indonesia. The following chapters will present : (1) The background and previous achievements in reducing infant, children and maternal mortality rates, (2) a conseptual frame work to show the interaction between multi faceted determinat of poor nutrition and immunization status, (3) Nutrition and immunization intervention program achievement in Indonesian, (4) Nutrition and immunization intervention program, recording and reporting system, and (5) future directions.
It is hoped that this book will be of benefit to managers of health programs at central, provincial and district levels and also to those implementing these programs at the sub district and village levels, to improve the nutrition and health status in the community toward Health Indonesia 2010.
